Two men have been arrested following the incident on Thursday afternoon
A police officer has been taken to hospital with a head injury after tackling two suspected shoplifters in Clapham High Street. Two plain clothes officers were patrolling the South London street at midday on Thursday, October 2 when they spotted two men appearing to steal from a business.
Police say the pair resisted arrest before one of the officers suffered a head injury. He was taken to hospital but has since been discharged.
Following this, both suspects ran off and got into a vehicle in Stonehouse Street before fleeing the area. They were tracked down and arrested in Melody Road, Wandsworth 35 minutes later.
A 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm, theft, obstruction and a number of driving offences. Police also arrested a man, aged 29, on suspicion of grievous bodily harm, theft and obstruction, along with allowing to be carried in a conveyance taken without consent.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: “Police were patrolling Clapham High Street at approximately 12:00hrs on Thursday, 2 October in plain clothes as part of an ongoing shoplifting operation, when they spotted two men appearing to shoplift from a business.
“The officers tried to arrest the suspects who resisted, and there was a struggle. One of the officers suffered an injury to his head and the suspects ran away, before getting into a vehicle on Stonehouse Street and driving away.
“The injured officer was taken to hospital but has since been discharged. They were stopped at approximately 12:35hrs near Melody Road, SW18 and both men were detained. A 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm, theft, obstruction and a number of driving offences.
“A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm, theft, obstruction and allowing to be carried in a conveyance taken without consent.
“They both remain in custody and a crime scene is in place.
