A Met Police officer who used his work phone to take photograph his penis while on duty has kept his job. The officer, who was anonymised in the misconduct hearing ruling, took eight snaps of his genitals, including five while he was supposed to be working, a tribunal heard. The officer admitted all the allegations in a written response.
The panel found the images were sent intentionally using his work phone, and that the officer should have known this was against the rules. While there was some reputational harm, the panel stressed his behaviour was not unlawful and that the images were sent to consenting adults. The panel found no aggravating factors in the case.
In his defence, the officer blamed the demand and nature of police work, but the panel said it would attach limited weight to this.
To his credit, the tribunal heard the officer has taken ‘complete responsibility’ and sought counselling from a GP.
Sparing him the sack, Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor wrote: “In my view, after very careful consideration of the unique circumstances in this individual case, I determine that a final written warning is the most appropriate outcome.
“However, since I have considered the seriousness of this breach of the standards of professional behaviour as high, this final written warning shall be in place for a period of two years.”
