Dead-heading roses daily is a must

He explained: “The secret of keeping any rose flowering as long as possible is to dead-head daily. Do not just pull off the spent petals but use secateurs and cut the spent stem right back to the next leaf or bud below it – however far down that is. This will provoke a side-shoot which in turn will carry more flowers.”

Monty Don also emphasised the importance of making sure that roses are getting watered regularly during the summer. Moreover, removing damaged leaves will also avoid them from dying overall and look their best throughout the year.

By following Monty Don’s advice, beginners and experienced gardeners will ensure their outdoor spaces are bright all summer long. Just by doing simple daily checks that don’t require much time from your day, your roses will continue to grow and elevate your garden space.

It’s also important that roses are watered regularly, and especially when they’ve been newly planted or are in a hot, dry weather. During the months of June, July and August, make sure to add this task to your to-do list.
