From balms to tablets and nasal sprays, there are a number of hay fever busting products that can help sufferers sail through the day with less symptoms
If you suffer from hay fever you’ll know how frustrating it can be, with a stuffy nose, itchy eyes and constant sneezing just a few of the most common symptoms. How severe your hay fever is can be dependent on a few things, but the main factor leading to hay fever is a high pollen count.
Pollen season can start as early as January, but in the UK it typically arrives in March, peaking in summer where grass pollen forms the bulk of the issue. According to gov.co.uk, it is estimated that millions of people feel the ill-effects of pollen exposure, so it’s no wonder that readers are turning to Amazon to find hay fever relieving remedies.
We’ve found which hay fever products proved the most popular with our readers, ranging from balms to nasal sprays and tablets. All these items can be bought on Amazon and they will set you back less than £10.
Hay Fever Tablets
As hay fever tablets are antihistamines, they can both prevent and ease itchiness and runny symptoms in your nose, eyes, and throat. One of the most popular brands is Benadryl and their One a Day tablets. They are currently £5.99 on Amazon which is cheaper than Boots, Superdrug and Tesco.
One person said: “They have been a life-saver for me. Recommended to a colleague at work and she said the same. Amazing for such a small pill. I take before bed now and in the morning. Gone are the days I woke with streaming, puffy eyes and symptoms of flu, itching throughout the day.”
Other bestselling hay fever tablets are the Allevia Hayfever Allergy Tablets and the Clarityn Allergy Relief Tablets which are £4.95. Some reviewers have said that they can make you “drowsy” and “sleepy” so be mindful of this before taking.
Nasal Spray
Hay fever tablets tend not to help with congestion, a blocked and stuffy nose and sinuses, so for this, you might want to use a nasal spray. Sudafed is not specifically designed for hay fever, however their Blocked Nose Spray is ideal for allergies. Currently reduced by 28% on Amazon making it now less than £5, it claims to last up to ten hours and gets to work in under three minutes. You can also buy it for a discounted price at Boots.
If you’re looking for a nasal spray that targets hay fever, a popular buy with readers is Beconase Hayfever Relief Nasal Spray for £4.20. Cheaper on Amazon than at Boots or Tesco where it is over £6, one user said: “This is the best nasal spray to use to stop you from continuously sneezing. I do go through quite a lot of these from around March-Sept as I use it twice daily (eight total sprays), but it really does the job, I barely sneeze throughout the summer months now.”
Some say however that is does have a “chemical smell” which might not be suited for sensitive sinuses.
Hay Fever Balm
You may have heard of the age old trick of popping Vaseline under your nose to alleviate hay fever, but if you’re finding this uncomfortable to have on throughout the day, you might want to try the HayMax Allergen Barrier Balm. You can get it for £8.49 at Amazon and according to reviewers it “works like magic” and is “effective in controlling hay fever.”
The pot is on the small side as it will need topping out during the day, so for a larger alternative, consider the Nuage Hayfever & Allergen Barrier Balm.
Air purifiers are also a great way to combat hay fever – we tried models from Swan, Dyson and Breville here.
