Many of us struggle with food waste and often discard items such as bread that have turned mouldy – but a home hack lover has come up with a smart tip to help improve preservation
There’s nothing more frustrating than going to make prepare a slice of toast or prepare a sandwich and seeing your bread has turned mouldy.
The blue and green fungi marks can be very off putting – and most of us instantly throw it away and buy a new loaf – amid the cost of living crisis it is the last thing we need. And while bread bins and plastic wraps are often used, they are often ineffective at extending the shelf life.
Thankfully, a home and wellness hack lover has found a way to preserve food for longer and help stop waste. Katya Mackle – who is better known as @katya.mackle on TikTok where she speaks about family life, recipes, home interiors and life hacks – has come up with a simple, cheap, and effective way to keep bread from drying out too quickly and turning mouldy.
All she does is add a stick of celery into the bag which her bread came in.
Mum Katya explained: “In order to make the bread last longer, I use celery. Bread does not dry and does not mould for two to three weeks.” In her video she demonstrated how she opened the bread bag and put to sticks on top of her loaf of M&S soft white farmhouse bread.
The content creator also insists that using celery does not alter the taste or the bread nor make it smell. The good news is that the hack requires no expensive equipment or products. A packet of celery is 69p at Tesco, and 60p with a Clubcard.
Responding to the food hack, one individual said: “I started doing this too and it’s made such a difference.” Another said: “I store my bread in the fridge. Stays good for weeks. But I like the celery hack! Might try it.”
“So glad I saw this,” added another. Another added that they will be trying the bread hack as they are “forever throwing out bread”.
A fourth offered an alternative suggestion and said: “For bread, just put it in the freezer and it will last for longer than a month and just take it out a day before you want to use it and store it in the fridge.”
Food experts have approved the freezer method to preserve that fresh-baked bread taste. Speaking to Martha Stewart, Lisa Brooks, the chef and owner of Heart & Soul, a personal chef service revealed that both store-bought and homemade bread “should freeze well” when wrapped in two layers of plastic wrap before being put into a resealable plastic freezer bag, reports the Express.
