As part of its latest product launch, Marks & Spencer has brought out a brand new sauce combining sweet and savoury flavours that has left foodies both ‘conflicted’ and ‘intrigued’
Marks & Spencer has released a new sauce that has left foodies with mixed feelings. Condiments are a staple in many households’ kitchen cupboards, as they’re a perfect to add flavour to food. Ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard and soy sauce are all popular choices and there are also sweet options, like fruity jams, maple syrup and chocolate sauce.
However, there are some that have limited appeal or cause debate, such as Marmite. The strong, savoury flavour of this classic condiment has long divided the British public, so much so that the divided reactions led the brand to coin the well-known marketing slogan, ‘love it or hate it.’ And now, M&S seems to be getting in on the action, having launched some unique products over the last few months – including its strawberry and cream sandwich and Chunkd N’ Loaded Cookies.
The British retailer has just released its Marmite and caramel sauce, combining sweet and salty flavours that has got foodies talking online.
New Foods UK posted an image of the £3 bottle on Facebook and wrote: “New Marmite Caramel Sauce spotted at M&S!”
More than 1,000 comments have been left on the post, with Facebook users appearing to be divided over the new item.
One, who is a fan of Marmite, said: “Tbh (to be honest) as someone who has Marmite and honey on toast together I can see this being quite nice lol.”
Another commenter added: “Honestly, one of the best things I’ve tried is fudge with Marmite on it so this is gonna be a big old ‘hell yeah’ from me.”
A third declared: “Marmite is taking over the world and I’m here for it.” A different user admitted that they are “not entirely sure on the sound of this but also very intrigued.”
A fifth chimed in: “I’m conflicted here. Love some Marm and love some caramel, but this?” On the other hand, some foodies were simply disgusted as they left comments, including “it can go in the bin with the other Marmite atrocities”, “ewwwww don’t think I like the sound of that”, “barf” and “sounds rank.”
The description of the Marmite and caramel sauce on the M&S website reads: “Sweet meets savoury in our Caramel Sauce & Marmite® spread – a bold blend of smooth caramel and Marmite®.
“The result is a rich, umami-laced sauce that’s full of character. Drizzle over ice cream or dip in churros for a twist that’s not for the faint-hearted.”
M&S also shared a post on Facebook telling shoppers what’s new in the M&S Foodhall, from the Marmite and caramel sauce to Hot Maple Syrup with a chilli kick and peanut butter and seedless raspberry jam spread.
The supermarket urged shoppers to taste the new Marmite product as in the post’s caption it enthused: “Our brand new Marmite & Caramel Spread HAS to be tried to be believed.
“This sweet and salty topper is a mind-blowing mix of rich caramel sauce with the iconic savoury flavours of Marmite. Trust us, this is an absolute must-try.”
