A mum has admitted she feels ‘stupid’ because of the restrictions she’s put on herself when it comes to naming her baby, but others have assured her she’s just being ‘practical’
Trying to choose a baby name can leave you wanting to tear your hair out.
There’s a seemingly endless list of baby names to choose from, and you can spend your entire pregnancy trying to come up with the perfect moniker for your impending arrival. Whether you want a unique name or a timeless classic, it’s not as easy as plucking a name out of thin air.
One mum has even admitted trying to choose a name for her daughter has left her feeling “stupid”. She has decided her child’s name must start with the letter M, but the more she thinks about it, the less sure she is of her decision.
In a post on Reddit, the mum-to-be explained she has family jewellery pieces that are monogrammed with the letter M, which she can’t make use of because her name doesn’t start with an M.
So, to make sure the jewellery stays in the family and can be used, she wants to give her daughter an M name. However, she’s worried that basing her daughter’s entire name on some jewellery is “stupid”, and has turned to social media for advice.
She wrote: “Is giving our daughter an M name because she is set to inherit family jewellery pieces with the monogram M stupid? Please be brutally honest!
“My due date is next week, and she will be our first and our last. Neither of us has M as an initial, and our surname starts with S. I have family jewellery pieces with the monogram M that never felt mine because I don’t have M as any of my initials. I want things to be different for my daughter.
“We have always wanted to call her Mia but give her a more formal legal name, initially we leaned towards Amelia, then we started looking for other names that could have Mia as a nickname and most of them were M names, so we focused on M names. Does this feel stupid to you?”
The mum went on to say she and her husband are thinking of names such as Marina, Matilde, and Miriam, before asking if any commenters had better suggestions. Commenters on the post told the mum she wasn’t being “stupid” at all, and some even praised her for her “practical planning”.
One person said: “This is exactly the type of practical planning I admire. My mum jokes that her best decision was marrying my dad because he had the same last initial as her first husband, so she didn’t have to change her monograms.”
Another added: “It would only be weird if you guys didn’t like M names but used one anyways just for the monogram. Choosing a name you love and gravitating towards M names because of the monogrammed jewellery is perfectly reasonable. Marina and Miriam are two of my favourite names!”
