We’ve all experienced the dreaded ‘ick’ now and again – but one mum has certainly polarised the internet with a story about how a moment of cringe ruined her relationship

Whether you’ve been with someone for two minutes or two years – we all get the ‘ick’ now and again. But one mum has certainly polarised the internet, with a story about how a moment of cringe ruined her relationship.

Before sharing this story, the parent explained that she’d been with her fella for just over one year, he didn’t have any kids of his own but often chipped in to help when it came to her three-year-old son. One day however, this all became a little too much, as the trio dived into their meals at a restaurant.

Posting anonymously to Mumsnet, she explained: “My three year old was calmly eating his food and standing up on his seat and waving at the other toddler behind him…

“He wasn’t making a mess, a fuss or annoying the family behind us. They weren’t bothered at all and their little girl, who looked ages with him, were waving back and forth. I’m very sure she goes to his nursery but it’s always a child minder who collects this girl so I have no idea who mum or dad are.”

Despite the playfulness of this interaction, the mum implied that her boyfriend seemed to take it all a little too seriously, repeatedly asking the happy toddler to sit back down. When her son didn’t listen, the boyfriend then tried to intervene, knocking a drink over in the process.

“[He] then put his hand across the table to sit him down spilling my drink all over my son’s plate and all over my coat and the table.,” she unveiled. “And was like “aww f*** sake”, like it was our fault? I just pretended I didn’t even see it happen and kept eating. There’s no reason to have done it in the first place.”

While this may seem like a minor mishap, the mum confessed that she hadn’t felt attracted to her boyfriend since and wondered if she was being unreasonable. She added: “Why would you possibly do that? He was bothering no one. It didn’t seem like an out of control kids [situation], or I had no control over him, and just let him run wild. He was eating standing up waving.”

The mother’s confession was met with countless stunned comments on Mumsnet, with many voicing that her fella shouldn’t be trying to control a toddler that isn’t his child. One person wrote: “So your partner who isn’t the father and who you’ve only been with for a year manhandled your toddler and made a scene and you pretended it didn’t happen?? Bin the partner.”

Another added: “Were you not angry he basically ruined your child’s meal by spilling a drink on it? And not to mention going to grab him from across the table???”

However, one user did side with the boyfriend in this situation, writing: “Allowing your child to stand on a restaurant chair is a bit odd. You should really show your child how to behave in public.”
