A mum says she will ‘call the police’ if her mother-in-law babysits or spends alone time with her daughter after she completely betrayed her trust – leaving the baby in medical care
It isn’t always easy to bite our tongues when it comes to the actions and opinions of our in-laws – but one woman has drawn the line after her in-laws betrayed her trust.
Any mum, dad, or guardian knows parenting is no easy feat plus the role is often met with opinions from family and friends. A 32-year-old mum is so upset with her mother-in-law and father-in-law after they betrayed her wishes – she has since banned them from babysitting their granddaughter.
The furious mum, who wishes to remain unnamed, explained in a Reddit post that her husband’s mother kept “pestering” her about getting her baby girl’s ears pierced. The grandmother’s persistence came from her culture – where it is not uncommon to pierce little girl’s names when they are babies.
“I made it clear that I would not be doing that, and that I’d be waiting until she’s old enough to ask for it herself,” said the baby girl’s mum.
But the mum was left gobsmacked when her mother-in-law decided to do what she wanted – regardless of her daughter-in-law’s views. The annoyed mum explained: “My mother-in-law was looking after her over the weekend and decided to pierce her ears without my knowledge or consent.
“When I saw this I threw a fit. My baby was crying in pain, and I actually took her to the doctor to get their advice on whether or not to take them out.” The doctor removed the earrings due to the baby’s discomfort.
The baby’s mum decided to stand her ground and made the decision to stop her mother-in-law and “everyone else on that side of the family” – except for her sister-in-law who agrees with her – to ban them from babysitting her daughter.
The mum added: “She is going to have no alone contact with my daughter ever again – or at least until she’s a teenager. My worry is that she’ll do the same thing again, and to be frank, she’s lost my trust entirely. I told her that if she had a problem with that, I’d report what she did to the police.”
The mum’s husband has sided with his wife, but claimed the issue “wasn’t a big deal” and hopes everyone can move on. A few people claimed that the mum should work towards re-building trust with the in-laws, while hundreds of people agreed with the annoyed mother.
One individual said: “Your mother-in-law demonstrated that she wanted to put her wishes ahead of you and your husband and until your daughter is old enough to advocate for herself. It’s reasonable that mother-in-law and father-in-law don’t get that one on one time.”
Another wrote: “Putting aside the cultural norm to pierce baby ears… they’re not her parents. They don’t get to make decisions like that. They knew you didn’t want it done. And they chose to sneak around and do it behind your back.”
Another agreed: “They had absolutely no right to override your decision about this. This was a massive violation of trust and I would not trust them moving forward.”
