Crimestoppers is now offering a £20k reward for information about the 56-year-old’s death

A man whose body was found wrapped in a sheet on a kerb in Ilford has been named for the first time. Derrick Jones was discovered on Walton Road by a member of the public just after 4.40am on July 23.

The 56-year-old was found with some injuries, but his cause of death remains unclear, the Metropolitan Police said. Detectives believe he was socialising with friends at a house on nearby Warrior Square the day before his murder.

A Crimestoppers reward of up to £20,000 is now being offered as the force seeks justice for Derrick’s family. This will be given to anyone who offers information leading to the identification, arrest and prosecution of the person or people responsible.

Detective Sergeant Wes Hawkins, who is leading the investigation, said: “Three months have passed since the murder of Derrick Jones, and we are appealing to the public for any new information that could help our investigation. While progress has been made, we still need those who may have seen or heard something to come forward.

“Walton Road is a busy street, and we believe someone out there holds a vital piece of the puzzle. No detail is too small — even the slightest detail could be the breakthrough we need to identify Derrick’s killer.

“Your help could be key to securing justice for Derrick and offering answers to his family. Can you help us?”

Anyone with information is urged to contact 101 or the Met Police’s dedicated witness appeal number on 0207 960 8193, quoting reference 1022/23JUL or Operation Crybath. Anonymous reports can be made to Crimestoppers via 0800 555 111 or the charity’s website.
