One woman can’t shake the feeling that something’s amiss in her relationship after her boyfriend’s subtle kind gestures towards their rather attractive neighbour
A woman has been left feeling utterly baffled after her boyfriend made a creepy comment about their neighbour.
Many of us are guilty of liking people we’re not supposed to – whether we’re willing to admit it or not. Perhaps you gawped at your sister’s boyfriend, or flirted with a personal trainer in a harmless bit of fun.
But now, one anonymous woman claimed her boyfriend’s ‘crush’ is a little too close for comfort – having expressed an unusual interest in their rather attractive neighbour. While she isn’t certain a ‘crush’ is the right way to put it, it’s clear she can’t shake the feeling that something is off, following a bizarre incident.
“We have been together for five years and moved to a new town a few months ago,” the woman explained on Reddit. “Our neighbours are a young couple who came over to introduce themselves soon after we moved in.”
Although the couple were around 15 to 20 years younger than them, they all seemed to get along. The Redditor expressed this to her boyfriend, who then said something completely out of the blue about the woman.
She continued: “After they left my boyfriend said: ‘I could never have sex with her’ without a lot of context. We were just talking about how they were a young couple and we hope to get along with them.
“…My boyfriend mentioned he was a bit overwhelmed due to his social anxiety but I said he did fine in talking with them. I felt so taken back but I tried my best to forget about it.”
In the weeks after this creepy comment, things only seemed to get weirder. Sadly, the woman claimed there was a death in the family and she went away for a few days, before meeting her boyfriend at the funeral.
During that time, the neighbours moved all their post to a safe place so it didn’t get stolen. To show their appreciation, her boyfriend later bought them a thank you card, which may sound innocent at the surface, but felt odd.
“He didn’t buy me any flowers or a card or even call me for the a few days I was away helping my family plan a funeral but he had time for buying them a card,” the Redditor explained. “He left his phone number in the card as a way for them to reach us in the event they need anything else. The neighbours ended up leaving us flowers on the back porch which I assume was in response to him saying in the card that we went to a funeral.
“All this seems nice but I feel my judgment has been clouded by his comment after first meeting. He was also saying how pretty the flower arrangement was and she must have done it herself. It was a nice bouquet in a glass vase but I’d say nothing I couldn’t easily find at a grocery store.”
In the midst of her confusion, she theorised that maybe her boyfriend finds the woman attractive and puts her on ‘some sort of pedestal’. “I feel so hurt and like my complete trust in him has gone away,” she stressed.
“He has never done anything before this to make me think he was not trustworthy. She is a very attractive woman and my boyfriend has major social anxiety so at times he says weird things but I can’t get over this… Am I reading too much into things?”
Following her admission, the post was quick to garner hundreds of comments, with many users in two minds about the boyfriend’s actions. One person wrote: “I don’t understand why he needed to mention her in a sexual way. That’s kind of an odd comment. I think I’d feel uncomfortable too.”
However, another suggested: “Maybe he said that because he thinks she’s unattractive. You just have to ask him. You’re in a relationship together, you’re supposed to talk and communicate.” A third chimed in: “Intuition is real.”
