Choosing a name for your baby is no easy task, as there are many factors you need to consider first. Everyone has their own preferences when it comes to unique names or popular ones, and once you’ve narrowed down your list, you should also think about potential nicknames your child might have – as they may end up with something unfortunate.

Parents shouldn’t aim to please other people with their baby name choice as long as they’re happy with what they’ve picked, but one mum-to-be is being urged to rethink her choice as her family are worried it could be “damaging” to her son.

In a post on Reddit, the mum’s cousin shared that the pregnant woman wants to call her child Aamon. She claims that the name takes inspiration from a character from her favourite mobile video game, Mobile Legends, but her family aren’t keen on the moniker – as it is also the name of a demon.

Aamon is a Grand Marquis of Hell in Demonology, who is described as having the face of a wolf with a snake’s tail. The woman’s family is “very religious”, and the thought of having a child in the family named after a demon is upsetting them.

What’s more, the woman’s sister also recently gave birth to a daughter named Lylyt, which is pronounced in the same way as “Lilith” – the name of another famous demonic figure from Jewish folklore.

In his post, the mum’s cousin wrote: “One of my cousins previously named her child Lylyt (read as Lilith). Her younger sister is pregnant, and she wants to name her child AAMON. Now, she says it’s after a character from a mobile game, but Aamon is also a Marquis of Hell. You know who else is a demon? Lilith.

Warning: The below Reddit post contains strong language.

“I told her she’s naming her child after a demon, and she responded with ‘You are literally the only one who said that, maybe you’re the demon.’ I am cackling at the thought that Lylyt’s cousin is Aamon.”

The man also stated that he and his cousins used to go to church with their family before he moved away, and during the sermons, their pastor would refer to Satan by different names – including Aamon.

Commenters on the post were also baffled by the name choice, as they said that regardless of the religious connection, the names are “tragic” choices.

One person said: “Aamon is tragic. Lylyt is the real tragedy here. But regardless, I wish some parents would get it into their heads that they are naming people and not fantasy characters.”

Another added: “Does she mean Eamon, which is a real, Gaelic name? Even if not, she’d get less s**t if she’d consider that spelling.”

A third also wrote: “You can name a kid after whatever you want, but how can you not take into context what others will see it as? Jezebel sounds like a perfectly fine name, but in society, it is still often closely associated with the wicked Queen of Israel from like 3000 years ago.”

Others pointed out that Lilith has become a symbol for feminism in some cultures, as it is said she was the first wife of Adam, who was cast out from the Garden of Eden for wanting an equal relationship. However, they still argued that the unconventional spelling, Lylyt, was “unacceptable”.
