Certain situations in life require brutal honesty – even if it means upsetting someone but one mum has revealed how her blistering review of her daughter’s wedding day has caused a huge family row
A mother has revealed how she’s fallen out spectacularly with her daughter after confessing to her that none of the guests at her wedding enjoyed themselves, and the whole day had become a running joke in the family.
Now wondering if she was too harsh with her honest review of her child’s special day, she took to social media for feedback. She explained: “My daughter got married about a year ago. She spent about $20k (£16,000) on her wedding, it was a wonderful experience for her but for all the guests it really sucked. All the money went on things the couple would enjoy.
“The reasons it sucked for the guest was due to multiple factors. The biggest ones being that guests had to buy food, and drinks, and there was no entertainment. People got to the wedding and the ceremony happened. Then they got put into another room after a long day of driving out and didn’t get any food/ drink.

“Most of them were forced to buy overpriced food since they were starving. They didn’t even get any cake since the cake was fake. Overall not a good guest experience. Afterwards, it was negatively talked about and people were actually quite mad about it.
“Now my other daughter is getting married and asked for my help. Her sister offered to help and my other daughter made it clear she doesn’t want her wedding to be anything like hers. My daughter asked what she meant by that and I was honest with her. That her wedding wasn’t a good experience for guests and it is a running joke at this point with family/friends. I thought she already knew since a lot of people hated her wedding.”
Needless to say, the revelation caused an almighty row between the family and by the end of the discussion, the daughter was in tears calling her mum a “jerk” for pointing out all of the issues and being unnecessarily cruel.

People reading the Reddit post were flummoxed by the cost of the wedding and couldn’t help but ask what the money had been spent on if not the food and drink. Expanding a little, the mother said that she knew at least £4,000 ($6,000) had been spent on the dress and that the venue and photographer were very expensive too.
One person responded: “It sounds like an awful wedding but you’re in the wrong here. There’s honest, and then there’s brutally honest. You should have said it gentler, leaving out that ‘everyone thought it was a joke’. That was cruel. Most people will expect a wedding to include some food and beverages. While I understand the expenses, what’s past is past, and there’s no do-overs. You are too blunt to a point of having her in tears, how awful. For that you are wrong. Why beat a dead horse?”
