A mum has taken to social media to ask whether she has given her four-year-old daughter a ‘tragedeigh’ name that could cause her problems later in life – and has received a mixed reaction to it
When it comes to naming a baby, some parents turn to the Big Book of Names for ideas, while others seek inspiration from things in their everyday lives. That’s exactly what one mum decided to do when naming her daughter, explaining how she came across her future child’s name when bartending.
But now, four years on, she is wondering whether her daughter’s name is a ‘tragedeigh’ name, a moniker deliberately misspelled or completely made up to appear more unique than it actually is. So she has taken to social media to ask users’ opinions. She said on Reddit: “My four-year-old is named Tuesday. Is it a tragedies?”
She says she came across the name when hearing about Tuesday Weld – but says her daughter isn’t named after the American former actress. But that’s not her only encounter with the moniker, saying: “I did meet a woman when I was bartending. I looked at her name on her credit card and saw it was Tuesday.
“I was pregnant at the time (with a baby I miscarried) and told her that if it was a girl, I was going to name her Tuesday, and she immediately said, ‘Do it! I love my name. My middle name is Weld, and even still, I love it!’ I thought it was a good sign.”

She believes her daughter’s weekday name will prompt people to think about her on Tuesdays throughout her life, adding: “I like to think that if any little boy (or girl) breaks her heart one day, she can take solace in the fact that they’ll probably always think of her, at least one day a week.”
Commenting on her post, one user said: “I would suggest giving your daughter a very standard middle name so she can at least grow up and choose to go by that if she wants. Maybe she’ll love Tuesday, but you know there is a risk she will not and you should provide her with an easy out.
“Tuesday Grace is in keeping with the poem (‘Tuesday’s child is full of grace’) so there’s that if you like it.” Another user added: “It’s not misspelled, so no. It’s definitely strange, though. It’s one of those names that might be cute for a toddler but seems unserious for a future 54-year-old.”
A third user said: “I had a friend named Tuesday, years ago. I once texted her on a Tuesday saying like ‘It’s your day of the week’. She responded with genuine anger and I realised how many times she must have experienced various versions of that joke. So while I like the name and don’t think it’s a Tragedeigh, bear that in mind. Side note, why is the name Tuesday kind of a thing, but no other day (apart from Wednesday Addams)? Weird.”
