A woman has revealed how she’s ‘annoyed’ at her friend for using a name for her daughter without realizing it’s meaning – it was a little awkward when she found out

When it comes to baby names, it’s safe to say that parents can be a little protective of the names they give their children, often waiting to announce them once the baby has been born.

And while most baby names end up being cute, sometimes new parents accidentally make a mistake when picking out a name, leaving friends and family wondering if they should pipe up. One shocked woman took to Reddit to share her confusion over her friend’s baby name choice.

In the post, the woman revealed that the baby, who is now four-years-old, was given a rather unique name. She explained that her friend “kept her daughter’s name a secret for her entire pregnancy because she was so excited to reveal the name when presenting her baby to the world”, but that when she found out what it was she was left feeling shocked.

She revealed: “This is how our in-person conversation went after I visited her and her newborn in the hospital: Me: she’s beautiful! What is her name? Friend: Braille! Me: aww that’s cute, were you inspired by the dots for reading? Friend: what do you mean? Me: (awkward silence).”

In hindsight the poster said that she doesn’t know why she “just blurted out” her comment and that she’s “not proud” of how she acted. She said: “But she had NO idea that the name she fell in love with was also a system for reading blind (and named after the creator).”

The woman was left questioning how her friend could possibly not know what braille was, despite the fact that she was 22-years-old and had just gotten a college degree. The poster went on to explain that: “While the name itself sounds pretty, the context (of her mom’s ignorance) kills me.”

Reddit users were quick to comment on the post, with many users shocked that the poster’s friend didn’t know what braille was, while others shared their own similar stories with friends. One said: “That’s really interesting that someone could make it through 22 years of life and finish college and never learn what Braille is…I feel like they taught us that in kindergarten when we were learning how to read. i.e. ‘and this is how blind people learn how read.’”

A second added: “Here’s mine: ‘This is my daughter Sierra’ ‘Oh hi Sierra! I love your name. I think the Sierra is the most beautiful mountain range in the lower 48.’ ‘What are you talking about? I’m named after my dad’s truck.’” And a third commented: “If she didn’t know what braille was, where did she even get the name from in the first place?”
