A mum is desperately trying to get her husband to reconsider his choice of baby name, as it reminds her of something a ‘middle-aged bank manager’ might be called

Choosing a baby name is no easy task.

If you’ve ever had to sit down with your partner to discuss baby names, you’ll know how stressful it can be – especially if you both have very different tastes. Some couples will be able to decide on a baby name straight away, while others can take the entire pregnancy to reach a fair compromise.

But one woman said she’s putting her foot down and refusing to let her husband use the name he wants for their son. The mum-of-one is currently five months pregnant with her second child, and while the couple can both agree they like the name Leo, the mum pushed back on her husband’s desire to name their son Leonardo.

The mum said she “can’t stand” Leonardo as a full name, as it reminds her too much of the name Leonard, which she associates with the character of the same name from The Big Bang Theory or a “middle-aged bank manager”.

In a post on Reddit, she argued: “I said I liked Leo and he went with Leonardo. At first I said okay but the more I thought about it, I couldn’t stand the full name Leonardo. I’m okay with his actual name being Leo.”

The woman also explained her husband is Mexican so they wanted to choose a name that has a “Mexican feel to it” but is still easily pronounceable to her caucasian family, as well as to people in the area where they live. However, despite Leonardo ticking all those boxes, she’s still staunchly against it.

Commenters on the post were largely confused about the woman’s stance, as they pointed out that Leonardo is easy to pronounce and a well-known name in English – thanks to both Leonardo Da Vinci and Leonardo Di Caprio. Many also said they couldn’t see how Leonardo would bring up the name associations as Leonard.

One person said: “I can’t Imagine anyone mispronouncing Leonardo. I have to say that Leonardo is a great name, very melodious and so much nicer than Leonard, which has an air of a middle-aged bank manager.”

While another added: “If it isn’t two yesses, it’s a no. Find another name together. This is a human being’s name, and one you and the kid will have to use forever (theoretically), so it needs to be right.”
