A woman has taken to Reddit to ask for advice after her husband suggested they name their baby after the Loch Ness monster – and she’s not sure what to do

Picking a name for your little one can be tough, with mums and dads spending ages thinking about what their child will be called for the rest of their life. Some parents prefer traditional names, while others want something more unique. But one couple found inspiration in a Scottish legend – the Loch Ness Monster.

The mum-to-be took to Reddit to share her husband’s unusual name suggestion. She wrote: “My husband made a silly joke at our ultrasound and now it might be our kiddo’s name. I love my husband to pieces, which includes his sometimes inappropriately timed humor.”

“When seeing our rainbow baby’s heartbeat for the first time, he excited pronounced that the ultrasound looked like the original photos of the Loch Ness monster and pulled up a photo to show the ultrasound techs while I went to the bathroom,” reports the Mirror US.

“He excitedly continued to joke that we should name her if it’s a girl, Nessie, which made me realise how much I actually love the name Nessa. We are now strongly considering it. He thinks the name Loch (husband is from England) would be a cool name for a boy as well, but that one’s not my favourite. He’s also all giddy about the possibility of a funny story being the basis of our kiddo’s name and being able to share that with them in the future.”

But the decision garnered mixed reviews from fellow Redditers. One Twilight fan couldn’t help but quote: “You nicknamed my daughter after the Loch Ness monster?!” After the infamous line from the books and film. While others recommended a formal name, which can be abbreviated, to suit them whatever age they are. One Reddit user shared: “Agreed! Nessie does not sound like an adult’s name. Remember to name your adult child, not your baby.”

Another user echoed this and wrote: “Personally I would suggest naming her the full Vanessa, and you can call her Nessa or Nessie as a nickname. Remember that you are naming an adult, not a baby.” Other people suggested other titles, or points of reference to tell their child about the inspiration behind their title when they’re older.

One user commented: “Nessa is great. You could do Lachlan if a boy!” And a separate user: “For what it’s worth I love Vanessa as a name with a good twilight reference for a nickname!” However, it seems the reference to Loch Ness monster with people who have similar names to what the expectant mum was thinking to call their child is inescapable.

As one person wrote: “Lachlan is my son and we call him the Lach MESS monster when he destroys the house”, while another user shared: “My daughter’s name is Larkin and my brother-in-law calls her The Larkness Monster so I found this clip hilarious, can’t wait to send it to him.”
