When one woman posted a selfie in the sunshine, the last thing she expected was to be greeted by a bunch of congratulations messages – and the reason why is hilarious
A woman was left bamboozled when she found herself at the helm of a drama she didn’t even realise she’d unknowingly orchestrated – thanks to an accidental optical illusion in her selfie.
Rebecca Mcgonigle, 25, posted a picture of herself sitting in her room on social media, but was left baffled when her comments section was quickly flooded with messages of congratulations, as pals thought she’d had a “surprise baby” – but it was just hilariously her knee that looked like a newborn’s head.
The PhD student said that a pal messaged her within a couple of minutes to warn her of the mishap, but the congratulatory messages had already begun rolling through.
The image shows Rebecca’s knees pulled towards her chest with one kneecap exposed and the other covered in her white skirt, and the innocent pose created an optical illusion where one of her knees looked like a baby’s head, and the other looked like the newborn’s lower body was covered in a white blanket.
Some were shocked at how realistic it looked, despite the fact she was not holding a baby, but some commented with their congratulations, believing she was holding a newborn. Rebecca said she wasn’t sure whether to delete the post, but she found the picture and the reaction to it hilarious.
Rebecca kept the picture on her feed and showed it to her boyfriend 31-year-old Neil Pitman, whose response was “What the f**k”.
Rebecca, from Glasgow, said: “The lighting was good so I thought I’d take a photo to post on social media and I just didn’t realise. A couple of minutes after I posted it my friend texted me and I thought ‘oh no’ and then a bunch of people started messaging me.
“People were seriously asking if I’d had a baby and that was strange to reply to. I’m glad my family didn’t see it first and panic. I wasn’t embarrassed by it because it was funny and my boyfriend just thought what the f**k is going on?”
Comments on the original post included “Congratulations”, “I thought you were with child!”, “Girl congrats!”, and “Omg I thought you were holding a newborn but it’s your knee.”
