A bride has taken to social media to share how her mother-in-law wore a white dress to her wedding – but rather than throw her out of the venue, she supported her decision
When it comes to planning a wedding, most brides start with a to-do list to make sure their special day goes smoothly from start to finish. But one bride-to-be shared how she took a back seat in her wedding preparations, instead leaving it all to her event planner mum.
Taking to Reddit, she said: “She planned the entire wedding and my only input was the food I wanted. Otherwise, I was just happy to be there and marry my husband.” While her mum was knee-deep in wedding planning and preparations, her mother-in-law needed help choosing a dress for the big day.
She added: “A few months prior to the wedding, I was at my mother-in-law’s house and she asked what colour she should wear to the wedding. I told her that most of the family would be wearing navy blue, pink, or sage green. She took me to her closet and proceeded to pull out several turquoise-coloured dresses.
“Now is the time to tell you that my mother-in-law is…different. She’s as nice as can be and loves all of us very much. But, it’s hard to describe her in any other way than ’12-years-old’. She has painted every surface of her house in little rectangles to look like bricks with every room being a completely different arrangement of colours.
“It’s completed with what I can only describe as hand-painted butterflies that look as if you handed a six-year-old paint and said ‘Go paint some butterflies on the wall’. Now, this space makes her happy so all power to her.”
However, it seems her mother-in-law decided to add some of this flair on the big day, switching up her dress last minute to instead wear a white bridal gown to the wedding She added: “The big day rolls around and me, my husband and our wedding party are all hanging out in the building behind the venue waiting for all the guests to arrive. My bridesmaid says ‘Um who is that?’
“And I immediately begin to laugh because it’s my mother-in-law wearing a literal wedding dress. Long, white, lace wedding dress. But that’s not all. She brought a bouquet of flowers for herself. My husband just laughs and says ‘Yeah. That’s my mom. She’s different’.”
Defending her mother-in-law, she says she wore the dress not to make a scene but because she really is ‘just that clueless’. She added: “My bridesmaids know my mom is going to see her and have a heart attack because my type A mom follows every social rule known to man. This. Is. Amazing.
“I know I hired the right photographer because she picked up on my sense of humor. My mother-in-law walked down the aisle to her reserved seat with a bouquet in hand as if she was the bride and my photographer took pictures of her as if she were the bride. Best pictures ever.
“My mum did indeed have a heart attack over it but didn’t say anything to her and I smiled the whole evening watching the chaos that was my mother’s reaction. 10/10 experience – highly recommend a different kind of mother-in-law.”
While most users praised her for seeing the bright side of the situation, others showed their support to her mother-in-law for her ‘childlike spirit’.
One user said: “I love this story! I’m glad to see that not everyone is so concerned being outshined on their wedding day and you’re looking at the bright side – you could have a mother-in-law who wore a white wedding gown intentionally to p*** you off.”
Another user added: “Your mother-in-law sounds like someone I’d love to be friends with, and you seem like a super fun person too for not letting someone’s childlike spirit ruin your day.
A third user said: “This is such a cute and funny story! Do you think that not having to plan your own wedding made you a more relaxed, go-with-the-flow bride? Feel like I need some more of that easygoing and stress-free attitude!”
