A woman shared told how she exacted ‘sartorial revenge’ on her ‘judgemental’ mum after she told her she had been left ‘humiliated’ by the prom dress she and her best friend had chosen to wear

A woman has admitted that leaving her mum “horrified and speechless” over her prom attire was the revenge she deserved after she shamed her for her choice of dress.

Admitting the revenge was a “real victory” she said that at the time, she and her best friend had opted for matching prom dresses in different colours. The pair chose a one-shoulder, mermaid dress after a shopping trip together.

After showing her mum and arranging for it to be tailored by a friend a few days later, she revealed she was left “blindsided” after her mum told her after the fitting she was “ashamed’” to be seen with her. She shared: “She told me I had shamed her in front of her friend.”

After admitting her choice of dress was in no way “scandalous’” she continued: “My mum is not usually overly conservative. (The dress was figure-hugging, but there were no cut-outs, and it was a typical prom dress, not something that would draw special attention).” And while her mum didn’t forbid her to wear it, she admitted her reaction had left her so upset, that she hatched a vengeful plan.

After selling the dress for a loss, without her mum’s knowledge, she visited a pop-up tuxedo rental shop behind her mum’s back, renting a woman’s tux and some cheap shoes, before hiding her new outfit in her closet. On prom day, with her boyfriend and some friends visiting her house to get ready before the big night, she told how her mum’s reaction when she first saw her was “priceless.”

She said: “The look on her face was incredible. She is rather homophobic and generally critical of gender-neutral, non-conforming clothing, so I knew she wouldn’t be happy.” And while she didn’t cause a sartorial scene in front of her daughter’s friends, she pulled her aside before she left. “I told her: ‘I know you didn’t approve of my dress, so I decided to wear something a little more modest.’”

She admitted the pair had never talked about the incident afterwards, however, she said she believed that her mum had treated her with “more respect ever” since the event. And after taking her dress debacle to Reddit to see what others thought of her prom plan, many applauded her decision.

“I wish I could have seen her face when you came out and then when you explained why you did it,” said one, while another said: “I’m so sorry you felt like you had to do this. My best friend and I wore the same for our senior prom – I still look back and smile about it. I hate that you missed out on that.”

One reader commented: “A straight girl wore a white tux to our high school graduation. It looked fantastic. You can tell that it made quite an impression on me because that was 1985!”

“Life is too short to moderate your enjoyment of life,” commented another reader. “I bet your Mum chills with the emotional manipulation!”

“You certainly a-dressed the main issue!”
