A mum was left fuming after her own mother robbed her of an important bonding moment with her son – by going behind her back to do it before she had the chance to

Bonding with your child is vital, and it can be devastating when that’s taken away from you.

Parents all want to be there for big moments in their children’s lives. Whether it’s their first word, first steps, or their first day of school, being there to support your child is so important. But one mum has been left fuming after her own mother stole one of these precious moments from her.

The mum explained she has two sons and had recently been thinking about teaching them self-care, including how to properly care for their skin and hair. She felt it would be a good way to bond with her sons while also teaching them valuable skills that “many boys are not taught”.

Part of this teaching was going to involve taking her sons – aged five and three – to a hairdresser to get their hair properly cut and styled the way they wanted. But the boys’ grandmother threw a spanner in the works when she babysat over the weekend.

In a post on Reddit, the mum said her eldest son has been “enjoying” the process so far and was excited when he got to pick out his hairstyle online and choose his own shampoo. She wrote: “We went to go pick out good shampoo – which he wanted to hold throughout the store. We called the salon to ask what product to use to help him style it that way. He was so damn excited. I had an appointment with the salon in a few days.”

But after the woman’s mum watched over the two boys while she and her husband went to see the new Deadpool movie, she was horrified to return home to find her eldest child with a fresh haircut.

She admitted the new trim looks “cute” and even her son likes it, but she still feels “awful” that her mum would go behind her back and get his hair cut knowing that she had a plan in place to take him to a salon in just a few days.

“It’s that she decided to do it during a time when she knew I was trying to teach him something. I had a plan in place, and it feels awful,” the mum explained, “Am I being ridiculous here? Should I just let it go? It’s hair, and it’ll grow back. And when it does, like it will in probably only two months, I can take them to the salon then.

“I don’t understand why I’m dissociating right now over something so trivial. I’m waiting for someone to tell me to calm down but my chest feels hollow and clearly, that means something is up. Right?”

Commenters on the post were firmly on the mum’s side, with many telling her she has a right to be upset because her mother “stole a precious bonding moment” away from her.

One person said: “You’re mad because she stole a precious bonding moment with your kid. And I’m so mad for you right now. She had no rights. She did that on purpose and was happy to do it. This is so infuriating.”

Another added: “It’s not about the hair, it’s about the blatant disrespect. Your mum knew you had this plan in place, she isn’t ignorant or naive. She even started it off by telling you not to be mad, because she knew what she did was wrong.”
