An author spent ages coming up with the perfect name for a character in his book, only for his sister to slyly steal the name for her baby and then demand he change his book
Coming up with a unique name for a character in a book must be really tricky for authors.
One writer is raging after he spent ages crafting the perfect name for his protagonist, only for his sister to use it for her real-life child – and then demand he change his book.
The man said he “genuinely” didn’t know whether he was in the wrong or not for being miffed about what his sister had done. “I have been working on writing a book for almost 5 years now and one of my main characters has a pretty uncommon name that I really like for her,” he wrote on Reddit.
He said the unusual name was “Ashlaun”, and they were the “first character” he had created for the book. “In 2021 I lived with my sister for a few months and she loved hearing me talk about my book and hear about my characters. Back then she had three daughters. Flash forward to this year and my sister is pregnant with my first nephew,” he continued.
The author explained his sister had kept the name for her child a “secret”. He was surprised to learn his sister had named her son Ashlaun, and was baffled when she demanded he change the name of his character because she didn’t want her son to be “associated with a book his whole life”.
The original poster thought his sister was “joking”, until he refused and his sister got mad. The sister fumed that he was going to “ruin the name” for the entire family when he published the book.
In the comments, people were quick to tell the author that he’d done nothing wrong. One wrote: “This is something she should have talked to you about before taking that name.” Someone agreed, calling her “shady”, adding: “That’s why she hid the name.”
Another fumed: “Your horrible traitorous sister should have considered this before stealing the name. She knew this was your character’s name so I guess she’ll just have to live with the chaos she has created.”
Another Redditor joked: “Oh my goodness. Please include how your sister named your nephew after the lead character in the book’s dedication!”
