The government claims the potential law will save drivers £250 in application fees

A fresh law affecting all UK households without driveways has been unveiled this week. The change in rules for home EV charging is set to make it ‘easier and cheaper’ for renters and those without a private driveway, as announced on Wednesday.

The new legislation will require leaseholders to install EV charge points in covered car parks. It will also eliminate planning permission rules on pavement charging points, which the Government claims will save drivers £250 in application fees, whilst enabling EV owners to benefit from lower, standard domestic electricity prices.

These amendments will allow more drivers to access standard household electricity rates rather than having to rely on pricier public chargers. Depending on a cheap EV tariff at home would make running an EV cost 2p per mile, or ‘the equivalent of London to Birmingham for £2.50’, according to the Department for Transport.

Much of the growth in public chargers has been observed outside of London, with the number of devices installed outside of the capital increasing by 24.3 per cent, compared to 21.7 per cent within it.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander stated: “Wherever you park your car, we’re making it fairer, easier, and cheaper to make the switch to electric.”, reports the Express.

“These reforms will improve infrastructure for the EV revolution, increase chargepoints across the country and open up affordable home charging to thousands more households.

“It’s good news for drivers and a big boost for the growing British EV industry – cutting costs and supporting jobs to deliver our Plan for Change.”
