Oasis enthusiasts have been left puzzled by Noel Gallagher’s unusual pre-gig habit- chewing on straws. Alongside Liam Gallagher, the brothers have set out on their first performances together in 16 years, with Oasis returning to the stage for a series of sold-out gigs.
However, people have been picking up on one of Noel’s odd habits. Noel, the 58-year-old songwriter behind classics like Don’t Look Back in Anger and Wonderwall, has been seen in public chewing on a blue and white striped straw and members of the public have since worked out why he keeps doing it, reports the Mirror.
A post to X gathered images of Gallagher chewing on the drinking utensil, with supporters questioning why he is “chewing on that all day long”. Listeners appear to have sussed out why Noel is repeatedly spotted with the straw, and it seems to be having an impact on his live shows.
Supporters believe the straw is a “vocal straw”, with Gallagher chewing on it as a method to relax his vocal cords in the build-up to performances with brother Liam, 52. One user claimed: “It relaxes vocal cords.” Another added: “Train and rest and control the vocal cords and breathing technique by blowing inside.”
It seems the fans were spot on. The Mancunian revealed that a doctor had advised him to warm up his voice for gigs using a straw, following some vocal issues during his 2019 tour with U2.
Speaking on Matt Morgan’s Funny How? podcast, he shared: “He gave me his paper straw and said, ‘Half an hour before you go on, in your room, put some music on and put this straw in your mouth and just hum along to whatever comes on and your vocal cords will warm up’.
He continued: “I was a bit sceptical, but it really does work. Usually, it would take me a couple of tunes to get into it and now I’m straight into it, straight off the bat.” Noel added that he now takes them “everywhere”.
Fans were delighted to see Noel not only training his vocal cords for the show, but also delivering impressive performances on his guitar. Fans noted he sounded relaxed and was “getting better every night” of the tour.
One fan highlighted that Noel’s musical skills seem to be honing with each performance. “Noel’s guitar playing is getting better every night,” the fan remarked, clearly impressed by the elder Gallagher brother.
The fan continued: “After seeing Anais’ [Noel’s daughter] Instagram story of her dad playing the Champagne Supernova solo last night, I couldn’t help but notice how Noel is seemingly getting better. Makes a lot of sense, with how little lead guitar he had done since (even before) Oasis originally split up. He definitely seemed a bit out of his element playing solos again, especially at Cardiff night one (makes sense).”
Fellow supporters have since agreed, noting that the High Flying Birds frontman appears to have grown considerably more comfortable on stage since Oasis’ initial performance.
Another fan remarked: “It’s only been three shows and he already seems more confident than the first night in Cardiff. The only time I’ve ever seen Noel look nervous and overwhelmed was on the first night of the reunion.”
