Video shows a woman cutting down the yellow ribbons in the Muswell Hill area yesterday

Police are investigating a possible “hate crime” after yellow ribbons put up to commemorate Israeli hostages were cut down in North London. Video shows a woman appearing to cut down the yellow ribbons in the Muswell Hill area yesterday (Monday, October 6).

The video shows a woman being confronted by another woman filming her. She says: “What’s your name? If you’re so proud of yourself what’s your name?” The woman responds: “I’m not committing a crime. If I am then call the police and let them know you have a problem with it.”

A man, who is off camera, then calls the woman a “disgusting” person. She responds: “I think condoning genocide is disgusting.”

The three of them then begin to argue over whether the ribbons are related to genocide, with the woman filming saying: “What ribbons for people being who have been imprisoned? Abducted? We’re going to show the world what you’re doing.”

Police have said that they are now investigating the incident, which took place at around 4.30pm, to determine if any offences including hate crime or criminal damage took place. A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Service said: “Officers have stepped up reassurance patrols in the Muswell Hill area, following reports that yellow ribbons were removed from fence poles.

“At approximately 4.25pm on Monday, October 6, officers were made aware of a video circulating online which appears to show a woman removing the ribbons in Muswell Hill. Officers attended the location and are reviewing the footage to determine whether any offences, including hate crime or criminal damage, have been committed. Enquiries remain ongoing.”
