Why did Oasis break up?
Oasis return to London for their first gig at Wembley in more than 15 years tonight, but why has it been so long?
Here’s a timeline to explain it all:
1994: Heated Headlines Before Fame
Oasis made the headlines before they were recognised worldwide from an interview with NME magazine. The interview included the brothers insulting each other, which led to the release of the 19-minute single Wibbling Rivalry in 1995.
1994: Tambourine Tragedy
The Oasis US tour begun, and during the Los Angeles performance, Liam hit Noel on the head with a tambourine before he walked offstage. This resulted in Noel’s dramatic exit from the band, however, he rejoined days later. The incident created their 1995 hit song Talk Tonight.
1995: Cricket Bat Cruelty
Liam and his friends disrupted a recording session for their second album, What’s the Story, for Morning Glory? in Wales. Not best pleased, Noel allegedly picked up a cricket bat and attempted to hit Liam in the head.
This cricket bat was sold at an auction in 2011 by the journalist and writer Paolo Hewitt with a certificate of authenticity.
2000: Booze in Barcelona
Drummer Alan White had an arm injury in 2000 while on tour. Instead of performing, the group went out drinking.
In a heated moment, Liam reportedly questioned the legitimacy of Noel’s daughter. This caused an argument and physical fight which resulted in Noel leaving the band for the European tour, with the band completing the rest of the tour without Noel.
2009: It’s Over
The Wonderwall band’s relationship continued to deteriorate but the breaking point occurred in Paris. Before the Rock en Seine festival, the brothers had a fistfight allegedly caused by Liam using Noel’s guitar as an axe. This was Noel’s final straw as he never made it on stage and quit the band.
2009-2010: Separate Ways
Oasis was officially disbanded and in 2009, Liam had formed a band called Beady Eye with his former Oasis bandmates. They created the 2017 solo album As You Were. Noel formed his own band in 2010, Noel Gallagher’s High flying Birds, which produced in four albums.
2013-2025: Reunion Rumours
In 2013, the Rolling Stone magazine interviewed Noel and he claimed that the band would never make a reunion. As time progressed, rumours began for Oasis to return in 2016. Since publicising the reunion tour, fans speculated that Oasis would headline the Glastonbury festival in 2025. The band have revealed that this would not happen.
