The energy supplier is widely recognised as one of the ‘best’ in the UK

Octopus Energy claims that customers could get as much as 90% off their electricity bills if they get a specific type of device at home. Octopus Energy is widely regarded as one of the top energy providers in the UK, having won numerous industry awards, achieved high customer satisfaction scores, offered competitive prices, and demonstrated a commitment to renewable energy.

The supplier has some of the best prices in the UK, if compared to other mainstream suppliers like British Gas, E.ON, OVO, EDF. However, whether it is the very cheapest really depends on your situation, how much energy you use, and which plan you pick.

Like others, it offers a variety of tariffs for customers. Although it is the only large energy supplier to price its standard variable tariff, Flexible Octopus, which is below the Ofgem Energy Price Cap.

There are other schemes it provides, including free electricity during specific, unpredictable times of the day, and 90% off electricity for certain customers. For those who participate in the supplier’s solar power scheme, the company says they stand to save a significant amount of money on their bills.

Octopus focuses heavily on renewable energy, often rewarding customers who choose to go green with their energy. The company even says customers could make up to £300 profit a year with its Intelligent Octopus Flux plan.

On the website, it says: “Get smarter and save more, when you sell electricity on our solar smart tariffs. With battery storage, make up to £300 profit a year on the Intelligent Octopus Flux tariff.

“Pay in one go or spread the cost with flexible payment options. Finance your solar system across easy monthly instalments. All of our solar panels come with a 25-year product warranty, plus warranties on our batteries and workmanship too.”

To get a quote, enter your postcode on the Octopus Energy website to explore estimated installation costs. It explains: “Request a tailored quote from our solar experts, including everything you need for a standard installation. We’ll sort everything, from installation to setting you up on one of our export tariffs that suit different needs.”

Explaining its 90% off with solar and battery power claim, Octopus Energy says: “This is the electricity bill saving for a medium use home, with a 10 panel and 5kWh battery system on a standard tariff with our fixed outgoing rate (£81), compared to no solar installation on a standard tariff (£904). This is a saving of £823 or 91% of their total electricity bill.”

A solar system can increase the value of your home. Analysis by the Department of Land Economy at the University of Cambridge suggests a 16% value uplift for new-build homes with enough solar and battery storage to eliminate energy bills.

A further study of over five million existing properties indicates a 2-3% value increase for existing homes with solar panels or heat pumps (versus like-for-like gas-heated homes). According to the Sustainable Markets Initiative: Cleantech Homes report, 2024.
