Wake up to an ethereal world where actual clouds float past your window

One incredible Airbnb promises visitors a truly transcendent experience, perched high above the Monmouthshire town of Abergavenny. Located on the saddle of Hatterall Ridge, The Bothy in The Clouds is nestled in a carpet of heathery peaks, offering incredible 70-mile views out across the Brecon Beacons National Park.

The cosy stone barn sleeps just two, creating a romantic retreat like no other. With prices starting from £140 per night, the bijou bothy may feel a world away from civilisation, but it is just a short 10-minute drive from the two local pubs and a well-stocked village shop. Super-snug, the former mountain shelter is centrally heated and comfortable, but it is the breath-taking location and stunning views that draw visitors in.

According to the Airbnb website, guests can “wake up above the clouds: a wonderland shared only with a few sheep, ponies and the whaleback peaks of Sugar Loaf, Blorenge and Waun Fach poking through. ” Featuring a double bed, a shower with proper water pressure, a ‘thunderbox’ mahogany WC and a fridge for drinks, the Bothy also has a walled garden that faces south to Skirrid Fawr.

For first-time visitors to the area, the owners have helpfully left a guide to all the best and most characterful local places to eat and drink, along with recommendations for walks, drives, road and mountain biking and outdoor activities from paragliding to wild swimming. An incredible place for walkers the unique Airbnb sits on the Offa’s Dyke Footpath, an eight-mile Hatterrall Ridge between Pandy and Hay-on-Wye described as “one of the most spectacular walks in Britain.”

Outdoor adventurers who have already discovered The Bothy in The Clouds have fallen in love with it, leaving over 200 five-star reviews. One guest called Katerina said: “Our stay at Bothy was nothing short of magical.

“Nestled high and in the heart of the Brecon Beacons, we felt like we were living in a dream. Every detail was perfect, from the cosy comforts of the bothy to Verity’s and Antony’s warm hospitality.

“The snug bed and proper water pressure in the shower made us feel pampered, while thoughtful recommendations added an extra layer of excitement to our adventure.”

Another visitor, Claire, added: “If you are looking for a complete escape, this is it. It is hard to put into words the absolute beauty of Verity & Anthony’s bothy. The views just go on and on. It felt like you could reach out and touch the sky.”

While the Bothy is in a stunning location, the owners have issued a word of caution on the website, saying “Living where we do, you may wake up in the cloud, above the clouds – or with no clouds at all. Please understand that the weather can change rapidly in the hills and is not under our control.

“Also, please note there are stone steps, uneven ground, steep drops and open water so unfortunately the bothy isn’t suitable for anyone with mobility issues or young children.”
