With blue waters, lush greenery, and a link to one of the world’s most beloved authors – this seaside town is a must-visit hotspot. However, you might think there’s just one thing missing when you arrive…

One of the UK’s ‘coolest seaside resorts’ is no stranger to tourism, but you might be in for a surprise once you arrive.

Famed for its pastel homes on the waterfront and delicious array of seafood, Dartmouth has long been a staycation hotspot. It rests tranquilly on the River Dart, surrounded by lush greenery and walking trails that attract hikers from across the globe. Located in Devon, Dartmouth was recently crowned one of the best 20 seaside towns in the UK by Time Out – but if you’re looking to dip your toes in golden sand or kick back with a cocktail on the beach – you will be disappointed… In fact, the town is more than two miles away from the nearest beach, which takes 30 minutes to walk to or 11 minutes by car. “Dartmouth comes with everything you could want in a trip to the coast,” the magazine wrote.

“There are historic pubs, and there are walking trails straight out to the sea. There are boat trips galore, and there are crabbers crabbing away in the harbour daily. In Mitch Tonks, the town also has a veritable super-chef whose restaurants here serve some of the country’s finest seafood. It’s a taste of the Med, in a thoroughly British setting.”

Literary lovers might already know Dartmouth as the former holiday home of Agatha Christie. The crime writer’s beloved second home, Greenway, is now managed by the National Trust – meaning you can explore the 1950s interior and visit the boathouse, featured in Christie’s Dead Man’s Folly. Adult tickets start from £15.

Dartmouth Castle is another must-see attraction and is accessible via ferry or on foot from the town centre. The English Heritage fortress has stood proud for the last 600 years and features a Gun Tower from the 1480s as well as stunning views of the town. You can save 15 per cent on tickets by booking in advance.
