OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT, have made their AI chatbot available without needing an account for the first time.

They said this move is to “make it easier for people to experience the benefits of AI” without having to sign up. OpenAI’s own data shows that over 100 million people from 185 countries use ChatGPT every week.

ChatGPT started the current trend of generative AI products when it launched in late 2022. It lets people create content from simple text prompts.

Since then, big companies like Google, Microsoft, Meta and others have started creating their own chatbots, which many people think is the most important innovation of this decade. In a blog post, OpenAI announced that they are slowly rolling out access to ChatGPT without an account. Their goal is to “make AI accessible to anyone curious about its capabilities”.

As of Tuesday afternoon, you can’t access it without an account in the UK yet. OpenAI also said they’ve added “additional content safeguards” for this new way of using ChatGPT.

This includes “blocking prompts and generations in a wider range of categories”, but they didn’t say what these categories are. The blog post also confirmed that those who used ChatGPT without an account would not have the ability to save and review their chat history, share chats, or access additional features such as voice conversations or customising their experience.

However, those using the app without an account will still be able to opt out of sharing their conversations with OpenAI for use in AI model training.
