This stunning Greek island which is often overlooked is perfect for those looking for some peace and quiet, while admiring amazing views, and exploring quaint old towns
There’s nothing quite like jetting off abroad for a sun-soaked getaway, whether you’re seeking adventure, immersing yourself in different cultures, or simply unwinding with a good book beside the pool or on sandy shores. Thanks to its stunning beauty, remarkable towns and cities, and pristine waters, Greece remains a top destination.
Most tourists flock to popular spots like Athens, Mykonos, Corfu, Rhodes and Santorini. Yet one traveller recently revealed that a particular village often gets overlooked despite being absolutely worth the journey. Travel adviser and guide Declan described it as “the Greek island nobody talks about – and that’s exactly why you should go”.
“The Greeks says this island is like Santorini was 30 years ago,” she explained in a TikTok post. The destination is called Folegandros.
This gorgeous understated gem sits between Paros and Santorini and offers abundant untouched appeal. It’s the ideal retreat for those seeking tranquillity, featuring scenic yet peaceful beaches, breathtaking cliffs and walking paths, plus charming coastal villages including Hora and Chora.

Tourists won’t require a vehicle since the island’s compact size makes getting around simple – everything lies within walking distance. Additionally, numerous upmarket hotels dot the island, positioned right along the coastline. Accommodation costs and general expenses are regarded as reasonable by most visitors.
Declan remarked: “Welcome to Folegandros. No cruise ships. No crowds. Just raw cliffs, crystal-clear water, and a Chora that might be the dreamiest in all of Greece.” Declan shared some of the island’s highlights, saying: “Beaches you hike to. Sunsets at cliffside churches. Handmade matsata pasta from tiny tavernas. It’s wild, romantic, and totally untouched – like Greece from 30 years ago. Visit before it blows up.”
One excited follower responded: “Folegandros is the next in my Greek Island bucket list,” Another chimed in: “Adding Folegandros to my list of Greek Islands to visit.”
A third simply stated: “Oh, I want to go.” A traveller who had already visited the island said: “Here right now and can confirm, it’s a gem.”
Another reminisced about their trip, saying they “loved every minute” of it. Another fan of the island commented: “I love Folegandros – so lowkey and chill.”
One person even claimed: “Folegandros is better than Santorini, beaches and sea wise.” Yet another shared: “Folegandros got very fashionable for a few years in the 90s, but it slowed down.”
Getting to Folegandros:
The island doesn’t have its own airport, so you’ll need to fly elsewhere and then take a ferry. Most people fly to Santorini and then hop on a 45-minute ferry ride to Folegandros.
However, be aware that there are only around two ferry journeys per day to the island during high season, and fewer in the low season.
Alternatively, you can fly to Athens and then take a ferry from Piraeus Port to Folegandros. This journey takes approximately 3 hours 45 minutes, with around two to three ferry crossings per day via this route.
