A seemingly simple question on a child’s English homework has left Brits across the nation completely stumped as they’re convinced the kid is right and the teacher is actually in the wrong

Brits have been left scratching their heads after a kid’s English homework has gone viral for all the wrong reasons.

Whenever we see a red cross on our little ones’ maths quiz – we presume the teacher is right and the three-year-old who can’t string a sentence together is probably in the wrong. But, swathes of adults have defended one child after agreeing they got a tricky English question right.

In fact, people have branded the teacher an ‘idiot’ and urged the parent to go into the school and challenge the baffling marking… So, what do you think the right answer is?

Taking to Reddit, one parent showed their child was asked a multi-choice question that read: “What is the best synonym for ideal? ” The possible answers were:

A. Sweet

B. Nice

C. Perfect

D. Identical

E. Interesting

It appears as though the student selected C, perfect, but was corrected by the teacher who circled E, interesting, as the correct answer. However, Google’s own thesaurus and dictionary – provided by Oxford Languages – lists ‘perfect’ as the closest synonym for ideal. Other synonyms include ‘best possible’, ‘flawless and ‘exemplary’ – but ‘interesting’ does not appear on the list at all.

Thousands of riled users flocked to the comments section to share their thoughts – with a clear landslide agreeing the child was right. “You’re right, you should pull up the definition/synonyms and dispute it with your teacher,” one person wrote.

Another agreed, commenting: “Yeah it doesn’t say a synonym. It says BEST synonym. Which would for sure not be interesting. Your teacher is insane.” A third added: “Something ideal isn’t necessarily perfect, but it’s “perfect” for you in the given circumstances… but every other answer is horrible, so perfect is the… ideal answer…” While a fourth branded the teacher an ‘idiot’. The parent then replied to disgruntled commenters claiming they would go to the head teacher to complain about the question and seek clarification.
