Hello Kitty fans are raging after learning the popular animated character is not a cat – and the revelation left them gobsmacked. The company confirmed what Hello Kitty really is…

People are only just figuring out Hello Kitty is not an actual kitty, leaving them shocked by what the hit character actually is.

A video confirming the character was not a cat has since taken X, formerly Twitter, by storm as members of the public were shocked to hear the real origins. But some were less than pleased with the news and refuse to believe Hello Kitty is not a cat.

Speaking in an interview on the Today show, a clip showed Jill Cook, the director of retail business development at Hello Kitty’s company Sanrio, confirming it was not a cat but a little girl. Fans were not pleased with the revelation.

She said: “So Hello Kitty is not a cat, she’s actually a little girl. Born and raised in the suburbs of London, she has a mum and dad and a twin sister Mimmy who’s also her best friend. She enjoys baking cookies and making new friends.” Further explanations were given by executive Cook, who revealed Hello Kitty is no taller than a few apples.

“She weighs three apples and she’s five apples tall,” she said. But members of the public are less than impressed with the revelation. One user wrote on X: “Yeah no. How is that not a cat?” Another added: “So instead of a cat it’s some mutant hybrid that weights nothing?” A third wrote: “So not a cat, but has whiskers and cat like ears?”

Her comments follow Hello Kitty creator Yuko Shimizu’s recent appearance on BBC Witness History, where they said: “When [she] was first designed, it was printed on a small purse – a small purse released on sale along with six other different characters.

“However, as Hello Kitty far outsold the others, the company decided to focus on developing it further, and it was then that the character was given a name.”
