Tic Tacs can be an absolute godsend when you need to freshen your breath while out and about – but it’s likely you’ve been opening them the wrong way your entire life

If put under pressure to pop open a packet of Tic Tacs, it’s unlikely many of us would break too much of a sweat.

Indeed, it’s highly probable that most fans would feel more than up to the challenge, having relied upon the little hard mints for last-minute breath-freshening sessions ahead of countless first dates and job interviews. If asked, most would confidently tip the iconic transparent box upside down and shake a few of the refreshing mints into the palm of their hand, as naturally as taking a breath.

Turns out, like many things in life, we’ve all been doing this completely wrong for years. There is in fact a far more logical way to open Tic Tacs, and you’ll look a fair bit more suave and sophisticated while doing it…

In a video that has left a fair few jaws on the floor, TikTok user beckyp79 showed footage of a wise man exhibiting how exactly Tic Tacs should be dispensed – and it makes so much more sense. In the clip, captioned, ‘I was today old when I was shown this’, the man first demonstrated the wrong way to go about things, doing the simple shake into palm movement so many of us do unthinkingly.

He then showed how it should be done, with the little ridges on the inside of the hinge lid being key. With one deft upside-down shake, he carefully opened the compartment lip, pulling the box back, revealing how one single Tic Tac had been moved into the tiny crater inside the lid, ready to be dispatched.

This neat one-at-a-time method will likely also benefit those of us with moreish tendencies, who can’t help but gobble down the whole packet at the beginning of the day only to have none left to help us out after a particularly smelly lunchtime tuna sandwich.

TikTok followers have been left amazed by this revelation, although a fair few weren’t certain they could exercise such restraint. One person commented: “In my seventies but every day is a school day”. Another said: “Mind blown!” Offering a more creative approach, a third person laughed: “I thought you opened it put your mouth over the hole and shook it.”

If you want to give this true method a go for yourself, you can pick up a pack of Tic Tac Fresh Grapefruit for £1.10 at Morrisons.
