A Twitter/X user has concerned some members of the public with their joke about using a barbecue indoors as concerned individuals pointed out it’s a great way to ‘check carbon monoxide detectors’

An indoor BBQ has left Twitter/X users concerned as smoke was seen billowing through a living room.

The viral post showed a massive outdoor grill being used in the living room where someone was “blasting AC” and asking people to “grab some brews” before coming through. Though likely a joke, members of the public were left attempting to stop the man from grilling inside his home for fear of increasing the carbon monoxide indoors.

Posting a photo of the grill with two pairs of kitchen tongs hanging on the side, the social media user wrote: “Coals are hot, game is on, and the AC is blasting. Grab some brews and come through!”

Despite the popularity of the post few were keen to attend the party where carbon monoxide appeared to be an uninvited guest. One person replied: “lol are you doing that indoors? I bet it makes the place smell amazing.” The original poster has since revealed his alleged reason for BBQing indoors.

They wrote: “First go around with charcoal. figured i’d keep it close to the kitchen in case it made a mess.” Another user added: “Great way to multitask and test the carbon monoxide detectors at the same time.” The original poster was clearly joking as they revealed they had “turned them off” as they “wouldn’t stop chirping” as they grilled.

Others were keen to point out the trouble this BBQ rig could cause to the property itself. One concerned member of the public wrote: “NO DON’T DO THIS ITS A VERY BAD IDEA. The wheels and legs of the BBQ will scratch your wood floors, anytime you BBQ inside make sure it’s on carpet or put some cloth down under the grill.”

Despite the comedic nature of the tweet, one user revealed they had actually used a barbecue indoors because they craved burgers. They explained: “Unironically did the same with one of these when I was a teenager. It was raining out, but I wanted burgers. So I just kept the door and windows open while I was cooking lol.”

If you’re doing a BBQ at home, it’s important to follow safety advice. For example, London Fire Brigade warns they should not be used on a balcony, because hot embers can cause a fire and spread quickly.

You should also never light a barbecue in an enclosed space – and keep keep it on ground level, awway from decking, sheds, fences or trees. To learn more, check the London Fire Brigade’s safety advice.
