People have been getting increasingly ‘annoyed’ by the new bottle lids, which are an initiative in order to help prevent single use plastics ending up on beaches – and they’ve just found out there’s an answer
Those who drink from plastic bottles regularly will know a recent change has made them slightly more challenging to sip from.
In a bid to reduce reduce plastic waste, the bottle caps are now attached to the bottle by two small pieces of plastic. The initiative was first announced by the EU in 2018 because bottle caps are one of the most littered single-use plastic products on beaches, and has since been rolling out across Europe – including the UK.
While it’s all for a good cause, there’s no denying it makes drinking out of plastic bottles a slighly more annoying experience – as the top will often either hit your nose or make it trickier to drink from.
But it turns out there’s a way to manoeuvre the bottle top, without taking it off completely – making it a lot easier to drink from. And people are only just realising.
Taking to TikTok, content creator Joanna asked her followers if they knew “the special trick with these new tops”, as she had only just learned it and was “honesltly mind blown”.
While Joanna understands the new initiative, which will help reduce the plastic waste on beaches, she admitted it was “a bit annoying” to drink with. “It can hit you in the mouth, and is just a bit frustrating and annoying,” the mum-of-two added.
She then explained that when she was drinking a bottle of Coca-Cola her friend had remarked that she was “doing it wrong”. Joanna then demonstrated that there’s a “double ring” on the bottle – that means there’s one ring attaching the whole contraption to the bottle, and another which just the cork is attached to.
In a swift movement, she showed how you can pull the cork over the top of the bottle, allowing it to hang down the side of it – away from your mouth. There is still a ring attached though so the cap doesn’t come off.
This means you can drink freely without the lid annoying you while you are drinking – and crucially means they can still be recycled together. Other TikTok followers were also unaware of it, with one person writing: “I found this out the other day and I was like [mind-blown emoji]”.
A second commented: “I only found out about this a couple of days ago, much easier. Thank goodness for grandchildren show Granny how its done!!” while a third added: “Thank you, I didn’t know either.”
