Pepsi fans have been left shocked to learn the true meaning behind the logo on the drink – but do you think you know what the red, white, and blue actually means?
There’s nothing quite like cracking open an ice-cold Pepsi when you’re thirsty – but have you ever paused to wonder what the meaning behind the logo is?
It’s so easy to take logos at face value because we see them so often, but sometimes there are hidden meanings within them. Often, logos contain things like clever visual puns, subtle references to the company’s history, and hidden meanings, which can be overlooked on a daily basis.
Logos are a visual embodiment of a company’s identity, values, and aspirations, aimed at their target audience. And Pepsi’s logo is no different, shares Spencer, a writer for The Small Business Blog – but do you think you know the meaning behind the logo?
Pepsi was first invented in 1893 as “Brad’s Drink” by Caleb Bradham, who sold the drink at his drugstore in New Bern, North Carolina. It was renamed Pepsi-Cola in 1898, “Pepsi” because it was advertised to relieve dyspepsia (indigestion) and “Cola” referring to the cola flavour. Bradham wanted to make a drink that would aid in digestion and boost energy at the same time – and it’s still a popular drink of choice today.
According to Spencer, the logo’s colours, red, white and blue, has a rather deep meaning. He said: “The red, white, and blue colours in Pepsi’s logo evoke the patriotic spirit of the American flag, reflecting the brand’s deep-rooted ties to American culture and heritage.
“The logo underscores Pepsi’s legacy as a beloved American beverage brand, symbolising its status as an American icon. This timeless design resonates with consumers, evoking a sense of pride and nostalgia for generations of Pepsi drinkers.”
Earlier this year, Pepsi fans were left gutted after realising Pepsi Max Raspberry is no more. It first launched in 2019 and has been phased out. Pepsi didn’t reveal any plans to bring the drink back to supermarkets anytime soon and says it will focus its efforts on existing flavours.
It’s a second blow to Pepsi fans who are still mourning the loss of Pepsi Ginger, which was discontinued back in 2021. The end of the era isn’t over just yet – as retailers including eBay are still flogging cans of the axed product whilst stock lasts. But if you’re looking for a new and exciting flavour to try, you can purchase Pepsi Mac Mango from Sainsbury’s for £2.25, or Tesco for £1.79.
