Serial entrepreneur Perry Burns has released a new book aimed at helping SMEs tackle the challenges of running a business, offering practical advice rarely found in titles focused on large corporations.
“101 Things I Wish I Had Known Before I Started My Business” officially launches on 1st September 2025 and is already receiving praise as a “first-aid kit” for entrepreneurs. Drawing on five decades of business experience, Perry combines insights, anecdotes, and “war stories” that reflect the everyday realities of leading a small business while remaining relevant to wider industries.
True to entrepreneurial form, the publication’s journey wasn’t entirely smooth. A communication issue with the publisher led to the wrong version being printed, resulting in a handful of typos in the first edition. Perry cleverly turns this mishap into a learning moment, introducing his SAFETY process (detailed on page 203), and quips:
“Readers of the first edition have been the lucky recipients of the ‘E’ & ‘T’ parts of the process.”
Reassuring readers, Perry confirms that all key issues have been corrected and encourages them to highlight any others they may find:
“It’s all part of the entrepreneurial journey,” he adds with a smile.
The book explores diverse topics ranging from finance and leadership to emerging trends in AI and SEO. Blending practical strategies with humour, cartoons, and QR-linked resources, it provides a toolkit for entrepreneurs at every stage of their journey. Perry is also inviting readers to submit their own “war stories” for possible inclusion in future editions.
Starting his career selling cash registers door-to-door, Perry transitioned into retail technology and later expanded into sectors including finance, professional services, and electric motorbikes. Promoted to his first board role in 1985, he has since served on the boards of UK Finance and the Motorcycle Industry Association. Today, he continues to advocate for vision, strategy, and communication as the pillars of long-term business success.
