A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 28-year-old woman has died. Thames Valley Police has launched an investigation following the unexplained death in Tilehurst.

Officers were called to the riverbank behind Tilehurst Station at around 11.30pm on Sunday, August 24, to reports of a public cardiac arrest.

A 28-year-old woman was taken to hospital but sadly died. The coroner has been informed.

The woman’s next of kin have not been informed yet so she has not been formally identified, police said.

A 39-year-old man from Reading was arrested on suspicion of murder on Sunday. He remains in police custody.

A scene remained in place at the location and was expected to be released on Wednesday, August 27.

Thames Valley Police have apologised for any inconvenience caused by the scene and said members of the community will see an increased police presence while they carry out enquiries. The public has been told to speak to a uniformed officer if they have any concerns.

Senior investigating officer Detective Inspector Alice Broad, of our Major Crime Unit, said: “We understand this unexplained death and arrest will be of concern but we do not believe there is any threat to the wider public.

“While we have arrested a man on suspicion of murder, the woman’s death is currently unexplained and the suspect remains in our custody.

“While the deceased woman has not been formally identified as we have not spoken to her next of kin yet, we believe she was staying in the area and knew the suspect. Please be considerate that her next of kin are not aware when posting online.

“We are in the early stages of a complex investigation but we are following a number of lines of enquiry to establish the circumstances around the death.”
