Fans of the Royal Family can’t believe ‘how fast time flies’ following the release of Prince George’s 12th birthday photo. The young heir to the throne looks very grown-up in the portrait, posing in the countryside with a friendship bracelet and smile on his face.

The snap was taken by Josh Shinner in Norfolk earlier this year, with George enjoying the outdoors in a checked shirt and gilet. Paying tribute, the Prince and Princess of Wales simply said “Happy 12th Birthday to Prince George!”

Now just one year from teendom, for some followers it seems like just yesterday William and Kate announced his birth on the steps of St Mary’s Hospital in 2013. Taking to social media to share their disbelief, one ecstatic fan said: “A very happy 12th birthday to Prince George! Where did the time go?”

Do you think Prince George looks like Prince William when he was a similar age? Comment below, and join in on the conversation.

A second added: “Happy Birthday Prince George, hope you have a lovely day with your family. Wow, I actually can’t believe you’re 12, how time flies by,” with a third adding: “Hope your day’s filled with love, light and surprises! Can’t believe he’s all grown up now!”

Others were quick to point out the striking similarity between the future King and his father, particularly in his smart outfit. “Prince George is growing up to be a fine young man, said one social media user, “And he looks so much like his Papa!”

Another shared: “What a beautiful photo! He looks just like William at that age.”

George is William and Kate’s oldest child and is second in line to the throne. He was born weighing 8lb 6oz at the private Lindo Wing of St Mary’s, where a stay costs almost £13k. His last big public outing came alongside younger sister Charlotte, having accompanied their parents at the Wimbledon men’s single final.

Before that, he took part in June’s Trooping the Colour as well as VE Day commemorations, taking a notably larger role of responsibility byjoining a veterans tea party and speaking to guests.
