Prince Harry opened up on the relationship he shared with his older brother, Prince William, and compared it to that of his two children, Archie and Lilibet

Prince Harry’s strained relationship with his brother Prince William has been widely publicised of late, but he has claimed it is a similar bond to that his two children hold.

The Duke of Sussex’s brotherly bond has taken a huge hit following his decision to publicly air their issues in a number of TV appearances and in his memoir, Spare. But they were once a tight unit as they grew up in the public eye – but not as tight as apparently was reported.

Harry opened up on the relationship with his older brother during the promotion of Spare in 2023. Harry said that he now understands better the dynamic he held with his sibling due to having two kids of his own. Archie, born in 2019, and Lilibet, born in 2021, hold a similar age gap to that of Harry and William.

Harry told ITV’s Tom Bradby in the build-up to Spare’s release: “The gap between me and William is very similar to Archie and Lili. And to see Lili obsessed with Archie and Archie like ‘no, no Lili, I need my space, I need my space,’ now I get it.”

He continued: “I get how irritating the younger sibling can be to the older sibling. But in the moment, at the time, I didn’t. I didn’t really grasp that, I didn’t really realise it.”

In his memoir, Harry opened up on a number of spats he had with his elder brother over the years, including how William would ignore him when he went to Eton. Describing their time together during their school days as “love but also separation,” Harry said to Bradby that he joined the school in 1998.

He said: “I talk about the relationship between William and myself at Eton and the fact that he didn’t really want to know me. You know, as the younger brother that sucks. It’s like: ‘Come on, like you left me at Ludgrove [School] and now I’m here at Eton, like hey, now we’re at the same school, let’s go.’ He didn’t want anything to do with me. And that hurt at the time.”

While hopes of a reconciliation between the estranged brothers have continued to circulate amid the family’s health worries, one expert has claimed it will “never” happen. There is talk that Harry’s upcoming trip to the UK in May could see him attempt to meet with William, but former BBC Royal Correspondent Jennie Bond has shared how she thinks there is very little hope for a reconciliation for William and Harry.

She wrote in the Independent: “I doubt that it even occurred to William to call or text his brother. In the maelstrom of emotion that must have engulfed his heart and head, there could be no room for a sibling who had cut so deeply into the flesh of their once close relationship.”
