Prince Harry is said to be regretful over comments and confessions made in his 2023 autobiography Spare, especially those made about his sister-in-law the Princess of Wales
The Duke of Sussex Prince Harry is said to be in a ‘painful place’ with sister-in-law Princess Kate as he regrets comments he made in his autobiography Spare, according to an expert.
The Duke of Sussex and Princess Kate shared a close bond before Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, left their royal duties and exposed private information on the family in interviews, their Netflix documentary, and in Harry’s memoir, Spare. His 2023 book caused a particular sore point between Harry and Kate, with the Duke revealing various incidents which saw Kate and Meghan fall out and didn’t appear to paint the Princess of Wales in a positive light.
A royal expert has now claimed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex could be seen as “opportunistic” with any Sussex rebrand or comments released in the wake of the Princess of Wales’ health update.

Royal expert Tessa Dunlop told Us Weekly : “When you do discover that your sister-in-law has cancer, and you’ve written stuff that can’t be retracted, that’s quite a painful place to be in. Can Harry and Meghan really hold themselves off as the caring example now? They’re certainly going to have to be careful of their timing with any releases so that it doesn’t look opportunistic”.
Following the release of Spare in January 2023, it was said that Kate was taken aback by the attacks against her and other royals in the book and was not looking to forgive Harry and Meghan for their outspoken portrayal of royal life.
In one entry, Harry revealed personal text messages exchanged between Meghan and Kate amid the disagreement over Princess Charlotte’s bridesmaid dress. According to Harry, Princess Kate messaged Meghan to complain that Charlotte’s dress did not fit correctly. After an exchange back and forth where Meghan pointed out there was a tailor on standby to alter dresses for the bridesmaids, Kate’s cool response left the future Duchess of Sussex upset and Meghan was reportedly left “sobbing on the floor”.
In another entry, Harry pointed out that Kate had once “grimaced” after Meghan asked to lend her lipgloss and put some onto her fingers to use on her lips, causing the Princess of Wales to visibly shudder. Another part of his tell-all autobiography saw Harry point out that his sister-in-law and Meghan struggled to bond initially over stereotyping which caused a “bit of a barrier”.
Since Kate gave her health update, the world has shared messages of support and hope for her recovery, with Meghan and Harry also sharing a short statement. Harry and Meghan, who are believed to be somewhat estranged from the Waleses, were alleged to have found out about their sister-in-law’s health when the rest of the world did, with them reportedly kept in the dark until the global announcement. Following Kate’s announcement, Meghan and Harry released an official statement which read: “We wish health and healing for Kate and the family, and hope they are able to do so privately and in peace.”
