Emily Maitlis, who conducted the now-notorious Newsnight interview with Prince Andrew in 2019, alleged that Prince William summed up his disgraced uncle with a savage two-word remark
Prince William delivered a brutal two-word verdict on his scandal-hit uncle, Prince Andrew, a journalist has claimed. Emily Maitlis, who conducted the car-crash Newsnight interview with Andrew back in 2019, has revealed the future King’s savage assessment of his disgraced relative.
The discussion centred around the Duke of York’s controversial living arrangements at Royal Lodge – a sprawling 30-room mansion in Windsor Great Park where he’s been paying what’s described as a “peppercorn” rent.
Andrew, who shares the property with ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, has faced public fury over his housing deal. The prince, who has relinquished his Duke of York title due to pressure generated by his links to the late convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, is now understood to have agreed to vacate the residence along with his former spouse.
As the scandal continues to make headlines, Emily has disclosed William’s withering two-word judgement of his uncle, who continues to “vigorously deny the accusations” made against him.
Emily revealed during a chat on The News Agents podcast with Jon Sopel and Lewis Goodall.: “Where I think it becomes interesting is William’s response to his uncle, right? I mean, I was told that he thinks his uncle is, quote, ‘beyond hideous’, so whatever Charles does or doesn’t do, I think the relationship will be very, very different in the next King’s reign.”
In an eyebrow-raising move in September, which occurred before Virginia Giuffre’s posthumous memoir hit the shelves, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson unexpectedly turned up at the Duchess of Kent’s funeral.
This meant Andrew ended up alongside key Royal Family members, including the Prince of Wales, and, according to the Mirror, Andrew was snapped seemingly laughing and smiling following the service, whilst others appeared sombre.
As possible additional proof of William’s supposed animosity towards his uncle, royal biographer Andrew Lownie, who wrote Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York, alleged that William was “furious”.
He further alleged that William has attempted to create distance between himself and his uncle. Indeed, he’s reportedly even tried to “not be photographed with him”.
Lownie revealed: “William, meanwhile, was ‘furious’ at being ambushed in this way, according to friends. He has been at pains to distance himself from his uncle and not be photographed with him.
“He believes his father has not dealt with him with sufficient firmness and that Andrew – and Sarah Ferguson – have done much to undermine the good work of other members of the Royal Family.”
Yet, this strained relationship may go even further. In Entitled, it was suggested that William’s views towards Andrew had worsened due to “rude” remarks allegedly made by Andrew about Princess Kate.
A source speaking to Lownie claimed there had been friction between William and Andrew for years. The source claimed that Andrew had been “rude” about Kate, but the exact remarks weren’t clarified.
