The Prince of Wales shared a moving picture of his young self playing football with his dad King Charles III when he was young. William also wished his dad a happy Father’s Day

Prince William shared a moving post in tribute to his father, revealing his affectionate nickname for the monarch.

In a social media post, the Prince of Wales said “Happy Father’s Day, Pa. W” and attached a photo of a young William next to the future king, who had a small football at his feet.

The picture was taken on June 12, 1984, in the gardens of Kensington Palace, when William was not yet two years old. Later that same year William would gain a younger brother, with the Duke of Sussex Prince Harry born in September.

Last year, the Royal Family shared three images to mark Father’s Day, which included a photo of Camilla and her father, the King and the late Prince Philip and a young William and Prince Harry enjoying their day by the side of a river.

The image released today comes after Charles’s official birthday celebrations on Saturday, where the Princess of Wales made her first public appearance this year.

Kate looked relaxed during her first day in the spotlight following her cancer diagnosis for the traditional Trooping the Colour ceremony.

Scores of royal fans lined the parade route in central London, hoping for a glimpse of the Princess. She received her shock diagnosis a number of months ago and had not been seen in public while managing the unspecified form of the condition.

In a message the day before Trooping the Colour, Kate said she had been “blown away by all the kind messages of support and encouragement” but added she is not “out of the woods yet.”

In a video, Kate said: “I’m looking forward to attending The King’s Birthday Parade this weekend with my family and hope to join a few public engagements over the summer, but equally knowing I am not out of the woods yet.

“I am learning how to be patient, especially with uncertainty. Taking each day as it comes, listening to my body, and allowing myself to take this much-needed time to heal.” She rode to the event in a carriage with her children, while William, the Princess Royal, and the Duke of Edinburgh were on horseback.

Both Kate and the Palace have said her upcoming duties – including Trooping the Colour – are not set in stone, as they will depend on her overall health. The Princess said she would carry out work, while the Palace added plans could change at the last minute.

With the King also suffering from cancer, Kate’s appearance was a rare joint public outing for the entire family after a period of uncertainty. The King also rode in a carriage with the Queen, a departure from last year because of his illness.
