Did the Queen tell Prince William off during her 90th birthday celebrations?

The traditional Trooping the Colour parade takes place in just a few weeks – and all eyes will be on the Buckingham Palace balcony during one special moment.

At the end of the spectacular military procession, members of the Royal Family head out onto the palace balcony in order to watch the incredible flypast by the RAF, which includes the Red Arrows. And it’s at this point that all eyes are on the royals as they’re often seen chatting and sharing a joke.

But several years ago, back in 2016, Prince William seemed to irk his grandmother the late Queen with a very simple move – and it earned him a scolding from the former monarch. As Princess Charlotte, who was making her Trooping the Colour debut, was held by her mum Kate, William was in charge of looking after Prince George.

George, who was just three at the time, stood at the front of the balcony looking over the thousands of people gathered below – and dad William crouched down to speak to him and explain the flypast. However, granny clearly wasn’t impressed that the crowds would have been unable to see him, and appeared to berate her grandson by saying “stand up William”. Of course, the prince did as he was told and rose immediately, looking rather sheepish.

Details about his year’s Trooping the Colour, which takes place on June 15, were revealed earlier this week. And it has been confirmed that Kate will not be at a rehearsal for the event next weekend as she continues her cancer treatment.

As Colonel of the Irish Guards, she traditionally would have taken the salute at the Colonel’s Review, the traditional rehearsal ahead of the main Trooping the Colour event, on June 8. However Kate, who is expected to return to official duties only when given the all-clear by doctors after her cancer treatment, will instead be replaced by Lieutenant General James Bucknall, KCB, CBE.

The former Commander of the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps has attended every King’s Birthday Parade since 2009 when he was appointed Colonel of the Coldstream Guards, having served as a Coldstream Guards Officer for more than 45 years.

Kate’s diary has been cleared entirely for this year while she undergoes preventative chemotherapy treatment after being diagnosed with the disease in February following abdominal surgery. The princess, 42, has not been confirmed as attending the main Trooping event for the King’s birthday on June 15, although palace sources have previously said that the future Queen may decide to attend some future royal events if she was well and able at the time.

Meanwhile, it has also been confirmed by Buckingham Palace that King Charles is to take part in the main Trooping the Colour ceremony next month and will inspect the soldiers from a carriage.

The monarch, who has also been undergoing treatment for cancer since February, will not be riding a horse at his official birthday parade on June 15, but will instead conduct the review of troops taking part while seated in an Ascot Landau carriage with Queen Camilla.
