Prince William meets a group of children in Newcastle
The Prince of Wales was “ambushed” by a group of youngsters during a royal engagement, but had an adorable response.
William was paid a visit to a charity that provides support to suicidal men and it was his final visit of the day. But as he left the Newcastle centre he was seen with a delighted group of children. William, a father to three young children, stopped and asked them: “Where are you? Where [are] you off to? Are you off on an adventure?” An adult who was present told the prince “we are”, and revealed they were headed to “the park”.
Before William left, The Express reports a young boy, amused at meeting the royal, stepped forward and introduced himself. The prince, who is next in line to the throne, bent down to his level and shook the little boy’s hand. After an interaction about “chocolate cake”, William told the group, “Enjoy the park guys, [it was] lovely to see you all.” William then spoke to, and shook hands, with a few other surprised royal fans, including another young boy.
One user responded to the visit and wrote: “Ok I think Children have set ambush today. Look at those cheeky faces waiting to say hi to Prince William as he left James’s place. When he waved bye, The Little Boy came forward for a full handshake and the other children jump in for a little convo.”
William paid a visit to James’ Place Newcastle, which was founded in 2008 by Clare Milford Haven and Nick Wentworth-Stanley following the tragic death of their son James who was 21 at the time He took his own life shortly after undergoing a minor operation after being unable to find the urgent help for his anxiety and suicidal thoughts.
The royal, who officially opened the newest centre on Tuesday, previously opened the charity’s first centre in Liverpool in 2018, and its London site in 2022. During his visit, William spent time hearing about the proven success of James’ Place’s provision across its three locations and had time to meet with past clients who have been supported by the charity.
William also heard from staff at the centre about the impact that the new centre will have in Newcastle. The city has one of the highest rates of suicide in England, and is the single leading cause of death for men under 35. Earlier in the day, William paid a visit Low Carbon Materials in Seaham. During his visit, he heard how they create their innovative, low-carbon construction material alternatives, and the exciting work the company has been able to do since becoming a 2022 Earthshot Prize Finalist.
