The late Queen’s ‘favourite’ grandchild, Peter Phillips, has broken up with his long-term girlfriend Lindsay, but this recent heartbreak isn’t the only trouble he has had in love, after going through a divorce only a few years ago
Often said to be the late Queen Elizabeth’s “favourite” of her eight grandchildren, Peter Phillips has suffered fresh heartbreak just three years after going through a divorce.
Peter, 46, has split up with his girlfriend Lindsay Kelly, 43, after the relationship “ran its course” and it is reported to have been an amicable end to the romance.
Peter, who holds no title and is not a working royal, is the son of Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips, and the eldest of the late Queen’s grandchildren. He separated from his wife of 11 years, Autumn Phillips, in 2019 and their divorce was finalised in 2021.
Sources speaking to The Sun expla ined that Linsday and Peter “were friends before their relationship blossomed,” after the pair reconnected in 2019. Lindsay attended Gourdenstoun School with Zara, Peter’s younger sister, and is the daughter of an oil tycoon, and even was introduced to the late Queen in 2022, and unusually attended royal events even though this is primarily reserved for spouses. However, despite their foundation of friendship and this strong start, “Peter and Lindsay have gone their separate ways as the relationship simply ran its course.”
This marks the first major heartbreak Peter has experienced since the breakdown of his marriage to his wife Autumn. Peter met Autumn over 20 years ago, at the 2003 Grand Prix in her native Canada, and she didn’t realise he was royal at first. When she spotted him on television and realised who his family was, “Mum said ‘Oh Autumn! What have you gotten yourself into?'” she reportedly recalled later, per Hello Magazine.
Autumn took a job in the UK and relocated across the Atlantic, and quickly was accepted into the royal fold, said to become fast friends with Zara and the late Queen Elizabeth even invited her to a small birthday party for her 80th birthday in 2006.
A year later, the couple got engaged and they married in 2008 in St George’s Chapel, Windsor, before the adventurous couple moved to Hong Kong in 2010 and welcomed their first child – and the late Queen’s first great-grandchild – Savannah Anne Kathleen. Just a couple of years passed and their family grew again with the arrival of Isla Elizabeth.
However, towards the end of 2019, the couple separated and revealed they had taken the difficult step in an emotional statement in 2020. At the time it was reported that the Queen had been informed after a long period of discussion by the couple about what the next steps in their relationship should be, and a source was quoted saying “whilst sad at the decision, both families are hugely supportive of them both and the girls” – per Town and Country.
In 2021 the couple’s divorce was finalised “amicably” and they released a statement explaining “Whilst this is a sad day for Peter and Autumn, they continue to put the wellbeing and upbringing of their wonderful daughters Savannah and Isla first and foremost.
“Both Peter and Autumn are pleased to have resolved matters amicably with the children firmly at the forefront of those thoughts and decisions. Peter & Autumn have requested privacy and consideration for their children as the family adapts to a new chapter in their lives.”
