Forecasters are predicting a dreary start to the month

Dreary weather is on the way in London with rain and 42mph winds set to batter the city on the first day of winter. Although London is expected to fair better than western parts of the UK, forecasters are predicting a stormy start to December.

On Monday, December 1 there is a strong chance of rain throughout the day with wind gusts picking up in the evening. The wind should peak at 9pm in the evening before gradually tailing off throughout Tuesday.

London should experience slightly better weather towards the middle of next week with sunny intervals on Tuesday and Wednesday before more rainy weather is expected on Thursday. Temperatures will be milder than average for December next week ranging between 10C and 12C.

Providing the wider UK picture, Met Office deputy chief forecaster Mike Silverstone said: “Heavy rain will move over south Wales from late Sunday and through Monday. Whilst rainfall amounts will vary, the largest accumulations are expected over the highest ground in south Wales and could reach 100-120mm through the day. 60-80mm is most likely for many hills within the Amber warning area, while those to lower levels should see around 20-40mm through the day.

“Wider yellow warnings for rain have also been issued for the southwest and northwest of England, as well as central and northern parts of Wales with disruption also possible in these areas through the day. This is a developing forecast, so it’s important to stay up to date with Met Office warnings in the coming days.”

The long range Met Office forecast suggest low pressure will dominate conditions in December – meaning heavy rainfall will be expected throughout the month.
