‘Rapes’, stabbing and ‘murder’ among crimes over Bank Holiday weekend in London

Whilst the eyes of London were cast firmly on Notting Hill Carnival this weekend, numerous serious incidents were called in away away from the festivities. These include a stabbing in Romford and a fatal ‘strangulation’ in Lewisham.

Two suspects have been arrested in connection, with one due to make his first court appearance later today. People from Sidcup and Hounslow have also been taken into custody on suspicion of various crimes.

It follows news that the Metropolitan Police made more than 400 Carnival arrests between Sunday morning and Monday evening. This is almost 70 more than last year.

Despite the bleak news, the latest figures from May 2024 to April 2025 showed a three per cent drop in violent crime overall across the capital compared to the same period during the previous year. This is a decrease of around 257,000 incidents

Man charged after ‘rape’ in South Wimbledon

A man from Sidcup has been charged with rape following an incident in South Wimbledon on Saturday morning. Tomas Hunt, of Ruxley Close, is accused of raping a woman in her 20s on Merton High Street at around 3.30am.

The 35-year-old was arrested on Sunday and is due to appear at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court at some point today.

The woman is now being supported by specially trained officers at the Metropolitan Police.

Woman ‘raped’ in Canary Wharf

An investigation is underway after a young woman was allegedly raped in Canary Wharf in the early hours of Saturday morning. The woman, who is in her 20s, told police that she was attacked on Hertsmere Road, a busy stretch running alongside the London Museum Docklands.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 4.25am and the woman was taken to hospital. She is now being supported by trained officers.

Pensioner, 87, ‘strangled’ to death in Lewisham

A man has been charged with murder following the death of a pensioner in Lewisham. Vasile Iosebica, of Wellmeadow Road, is accused of strangling the 87-year-old man in a house on the same street on Sunday morning (August 24).

The 47-year-old was arrested and is due to appear at Bromley Magistrates’ Court later today. It’s believed he and the victim were known to each other.

Man in his 20s ‘seriously assaulted’ in Leicester Square

A man in his 20s has been left with “serious injuries” after an alleged assault outside a busy bar in Leicester Square. Police were called to the tourist hotspot at about 3am on Sunday following concerned calls to 999.

The victim was taken to hospital, where he remains as of Monday afternoon.

A 27-year-old man from Hounslow has since been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and is in custody.

Two arrested after arson attack at Ilford restaurant

Detectives investigating a suspected arson attack at a restaurant in East London made two arrests over the weekend. A 15-year-old boy and 54-year-old man were apprehended on Sunday on suspicion of arson with intent to danger life.

Officers were called to the Indian Aroma restaurant in Woodford Avenue, Grants Hill, Ilford, on Friday, August 22, at around 9pm. Five confirmed victims – three women and two men – were injured in the incident.

Two of them – a man and a woman – were rushed to hospital in a life-threatening condition.

Man stabbed in Harold Wood

A man in his 30s was taken to hospital following a stabbing in Harold Wood on Sunday evening. He was knifed next to a care home on Matthews Close, just minutes from the train station, at around 6.10pm.

His injuries have since been deemed non-life-threatening, according to a statement by the Metropolitan Police.

A 49-year-old man from Havering has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent, possession of an offensive weapon, affray and criminal damage.
