Rapper Ghetts admits causing death by dangerous driving after Ilford hit-and-run

The rapper was driving double the speed limit when he hit the pedestrian

The rapper Ghetts has pleaded guilty to causing the death of a student in a hit-and-run. The award-winning musician, whose real name is Justin Clarke-Samuel, 41, admitted to causing the death of a 20-year-old after hitting him with his BMW in Ilford, reports the Mirror.

The grime artist from Woodford Green appeared at the Old Bailey via video link from Pentonville prison and pled guilty to causing the death of 20-year-old Nepali student Yubin Tamang on Saturday, October 18. The collision happened in Redbridge Lane East and Ghetts was disqualified from driving with immediate effect after the incident.

The court heard that he was driving over 60mph in a 30mph zone, and hit Mr Tamang who was crossing the road. Clarke-Samuel also pleaded guilty to an additional charge of driving his BMW M5 dangerously in London before the fatal incident.

The Netflix star was told by Judge Lucraft KC “the only sentence to be passed is a custodial sentence” and his time in jail is yet to be determined. The sentencing is set to take place on February 12, 2026.

Following the collision, Tamang died in hospital on Monday, October 27. He was an only child and his parents had sent him to the University of Roehampton to receive an education.

The rapper has featured on tracks alongside Skepta, Stormzy and Ed Sheeran as well as featured on Netflix show Supacell.
